Anyone had experience of Schools & Families specialist services?

Any parents had the SFSS come round to assess them for additional support in the home? We got a letter a few weeks ago saying they were coming round and 2 women came and asked loads of questions then said they'd be in touch, just had a letter saying they're offering us 4 visits from a keyworker to provide us with "strategies, help and advice" in the areas we have highlighted. When they came I said I didn't fully understand what they were about and she said she'd explain, but didn't so wondering if anyone here had ever had them come into your home and assess you?

I don't really understand your situation. I think if you explained abit better someone may be able to help.
Do you care for a child with special needs? Someone must of contacted them to come. Does the child attend a school and they are from there? Its difficult to beable to answer as there isnt enough information.
  • I dont need to explain more when im just asking if anyone has had personal experience with the sfss. if no one has then fine but i dont think me explaining more is going to suddenly produce more people here saying 'yes'.

you might not need to explain more but you may need to be a bit nicer when asking for advice or you may put people who could help you off.

Doesn't that, in itself, explain what they're about?

OP, what your local area calls the SFSS might be known as a different service in another area.

By providing a little more information, someone might recognise the nature of the support and be able to provide an answer.

  • But my point is i am asking if anyone has any personal experience with them. I don't mind if no one has and i get no responses.

The point is that they may be called something different in different areas, so without you being a bit more specific, it's difficult to say whether we have or haven't had contact with them.

Did you call them? DId someone else call them? Were you referred to them by someone else?

I have worked with families in different areas, and recognise the kind of service you are talking about. However, it would be difficult to compare, as the workers might have different training, be employed by a different agency, or have different remits.
I suggest that you ask them what their aims are, what their experience and qualifications are. See how that fits with what you want from them.
In particular, are they going to work with the whole family, with the parents, just with the children, or a mix?
are the women who came to see you the ones who you will be working with? Did you feel that they could be useful?
And if you were referred to them by someone else, talk it over with them
