housing benefits help

It looks like my wife its going to be losing her job next week (sacking) hopefully something can be sorted out and it doesn't go that far.

But I was hoping someone could give me some advice on any financial help we could get. We live in a council house and was wondering if my wife was to claim JSA would we get any financial assistance towards our rent and council tax?

I am still working and earn around 15k a year and would be our sole supporter while she claims JSA financially I would struggle to pay everything.

This is the first time I have been in this situation and was hoping some could help that may have been through the same thing

The answer depends on your exact circumstances, the easiest way to find out is to lodge a claim and see what you get paid.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Check your circumstances on the Turn2us online benefit calculator which will indicate anything due, such as HB and CT.

Note - I believe that people who are dismissed are potentially subject to sanctions of up to 6 months before they can claim JSA. HB will not be affected - it's based on income. Another member will hopefully confirm this.

JSA based on contributions (2 full tax years) last for 6 months, then any further receipt will take into account household income.
  • You may be entitled to more hb and more cb due to your wife not earning, but on that wage unless its a private let its doubtful.

Thanks for the Advice....I did the turn2us calculator but because I appear to be earning 15k a year we are not entitled to anything...

I thought on 15k I might have been able to claim working tax but they only pay out up to about 11.5k, we do have a teenager 17 years old still in full time education and get child tax for him but unless we are both unemployed it seems we cant get any help at all.

I might just be able to support us...I'm waiting for the results on thursday next week and then I'll have to been in talks with some of the credit companies I am with.

Are you renting? Even if you don't get any WTC, you might still be able to get something towards your rent and council tax, with a non working spouse and one dependant.

Living in a council house the rent is probably so low that they wouldn't get any help with it even on £15k plus tax credits.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • Couldnt she look for another job just in case? Then if worst happens she may only be out of work for a short while? Good luck with it all x

I just wanted to update this I know its been a while....in the end we couldn't get any support other than her signing on but this was only allowed for 6 months then we were on our own.

April this year she managed to get a full time job so thankfully we managed to do ok. thanks for the advice anyway
