Going from a joint claim to a single

How long does it take to go from a joint claim to a single claim for tax credits and income support? And can you get any money from anywhere whilst you are waiting?

    Hi Gemma

If you have an 'open' ongoing claim, you can simply ring the Tax Credit Helpline and tell them your new circumstances. They will go through it on the phone and usually will give you a good idea of the amount of your new award. I found it to be seamless and can't remember a period of 'no money' so you shouldn't have to wait long at all - you could ask them if there is any delay when you ring them.

I've no idea on the IS I'm afraid but i'm sure someone will be along shortly who has knowledge of that benefit for you.
