Charities that take leftover foreign currency

I used to do a lot of international travel for a former employer and as a consequence I have a lot of very low amounts of various European (as in pre-Euro) and American coins which I want to give to a charity. I doubt there is £10 altogether to be honest.

As it seems unlikely I will be getting on a Virgin flight any time soon, (they do a Change for Children appeal on board for leftover currency), I am wondering if, rather than throw it away, anyone knows of any charities that would take a small bag of coins?

Thanks

Quick google finds that Age UK do, and a Guardian article too.

I have a feeling that some banks also have signs up to say that they are collecting foreign currencies, but I could be dreaming that.

I'm fairly sure that Natwest used to do it, they used to have a jar sat on the counter, it might be worth checking with them or the other high street banks. Possibly also the post office who used to collect for barndos - again, not sure if this is still happening.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

    What place do you prefer?

I am not particularly worried what charity it is, provided it is reputable. I will ask in the Post office as I am going in there to post some parcels today. If not, Nat west is up the road. Thanks for your help everyone.

  • Our post office has a collection box on the counter for foreign currency (can't remember the charity though).

I went to my local Post Office today and they looked at me like I was mad when I asked! Looks like this might be something individual post offices choose to do.

Luckily for me, someone overheard my conversation in the post office and a local hospice charity takes foreign exchange, so I will probably pass this onto them as they are a worthy cause.

    Hi there,

I have a bunch of spare change in foreign currency from different countries: euros, swiss francs, dollars and cents, japanese yen etc.

i was wondering if anyone knows a charity that is willing to accept this? It's not a lot in terms of value, but it's quite a lot in terms of physical size. I'm aware of the unicef program - but that is usually run through airlines.

    thanks
  • Not aware of anything specific, but I feel sure the majority of charity shops would happily accept them. Particularly those with international operations such as Oxfam or the Red Cross.
    We can't find you now
But they're gonna get the money back somehow
    And when you finally disappear
We'll just say that you were never here
  • All Post Offices (Crown branches anyway) Should have a box for foreign coins/notes for Barnados by their Bureau de Change counter, I know ours does as I work there!
