£75 plus vat to take down 3x3m ceiling???

Hi there

I'm having a 3x3m flat roof replaced with torchon felt, 75mm celotex between joists and involving screwing up some thermal backed plasterboard to form new ceiling which will be skimmed.

Roofer is also installing lead flashing along edge of conservatory and being paid £2700 for the lot.

Originally the idea was to over board the existing ceiling with the new thermal backed boards, but as the existing ceiling is damp I emailed to ask if we could take down the original ceiling and checked he was putting in a vapour membrane between joists and celing boards.

The guy has come back said, fine - that will be an extra £75 plus VAT.

Is he taking the mick?????

Why is he taking the mick?

By the time he has driven to your house, sheeted up, ripped evereything down, bagged it up, hoovered up and then taken the stuff to the dump, its a mornings work. So £75 is fair.

If you don't want to pay for it - you do it. Its quite simple. What do you expect for £75?
Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.
  • Hi Phill99 - he's not driving over specially and he'll be going to the dump to chuck the old roof anyway so that doesn't count. He's on site doing lots of work over 2 days. I find it hard to believe taking down a 3m x 3m ceiling, sweeping up and bagging it can take more than half an hour - plus another half hour to put up the vapour barrier?

In no way is it a morning's work.

However, I might offer to take it down myself and see what he charges to install 3x3m of plastic sheet.

do one yerself first and then go around offering the same service for 75 quid.
i bet you dont make a career out of it.

one of the worst jobs ive ever done.
    Get some gorm.
  • I agree 75 sounds fair to me. If you dont want to pay it then save the money and do it yourself I bet you will wish you had paid as it is not a nice clean job.

Remember Christy, The guy has to get rid of the stuff afterwards. It just doesn't dissapear. He will have to Either get rid of it at the tip which may cost him, or take it back to work and put it in a skip, which he has to pay for. I paid £100 for a skip when I needed them, went through 3 of them over the period of time I had wrk done.

    Seems good offer to me
  • For £150 you could get the ceiling down, boarded, insulated and skimmed. Start at 7.30 am out of house for 1pm latest. This would be labour only.
I think £75 is a bit steep if hes there anyway as you can take out of the equation driving there getting kit off van etc, after all said and done its only roughly 3 plasterboard sheets - if the original ceiling is old lath and plaster then it would be at least £75 as its a really dirty job and it takes longer to de-nail the joists.

    And the disposal of waste?
    British Ex-pat in British Columbia!
  • Yes - he is there anyway - and it's a quite modern ceiling in a badly constructed mini extension so I doubt it's particularly well put up. I still think it's on the pricey side but for the sake of getting the job done once and for all I've decided to swallow it, which is what he's probably counting on. If I dispute the price I'd have to get someone else in for the whole job because I'd worry he'd cut corners elsewhere on the job. I don't know how much waste disposal is likely to cost, but it's not a collosal amount 3x3 m.
    Thanks anyway.
