Tricky one as if you decide to pursue it further, only a small claims court can award you damages and you'd have to be able to disprove their claim that the laptop was damaged by you.

You may want to get the laptop back and get an independent report carried out, not sure who would be best placed to do this - you'd need a computer expert. However you would more than likely have to pay for this report and if it goes against you, then that would pretty much be the end of it.

Also check the terms of the warranty you bought, as if the finance company have agreed to take this over they are responsible for the terms and conditions stated within it. As gyzmo said, the Sale and Supply of Goods to Consumers Regulations 2002 (which amended the Sale of Goods Act) make any warranties or guarantees given by manufacturers etc. legally binding.

I thought those policies covered accidental damage as well? I dropped my camcorder and they paid out

Not always - i think it would be best for you to take all the documentation to your local CAB. They will be able to give a more definitive answer based on what they can see.
