bikebarbie wrote:Hello,
I started my first year Uni this year and in September bought a couple of books which by showing my student ID card (not the NUS one) they gave me a 10% discount. Last week went to the same shop to buy another book and used some vouchers that I got for Xmas and this time I gave them my NUS card and they said that they don't do student discount!!
When I mentioned that I got discount on previous occasions they said that they do it only at the start of the accademic year and then when I said that it wasnt very good he replied a charming "is not my problem take it up with HO if you like!!"
I am so upset how can they not value the custome of a student and anyway where is it written that they only offer discounts in September?
Please advice!
Why should you be upset when they didnt advertise the discount that time? Its hardly their fault!0 -

Yeh you must be because none of my friends got the discount. How strange.0 -
Hi Smurf, if you go via Quidco.com there is 10% cashback at Waterstones at the moment and Wstones has free delivery to store on orders over £15 so you could get a 10% discount that way I guess........

so irritating that no book shops give student discount, just started a new topic and a book im barely going to use but have to get is £35ish!!
cheapest is £31 or 27ish second hand at amazon but by the time its delievered will have finished half of the course.
looking around and not one bookshop has any good deals or discountsnot even loyalty schemes except for whs
i realise it is not the fault of the shops and the discount is a bonus not a right but it still irritates the hell out of me!!Yes Your Dukeiness0 -
depends on the branch. blackwells is fully RRP but my student branch has a loyalty scheme which works out at 5% off after spending £100. generous huh?
ironically 2nd hand book shops almost always have student discount:A Boots Tart :A0 -
We are indeed lucky to have such a cracking little book store on the Hull University campus. The discount runs at a time when students will be spending most money so it works out a lot chaeper than anywhere else as far as I'm concerned. They also put signs up as the promotion nears its end so you won't get caught out. Their range is also excellent. All my course books have been readily available ; no need to wait for the postman to arrive! I've also found the staff to be enthusiastic, friendly and knowledgeable. If you want advice on which textbook to get they always know the answer. A really first rate shop, keep it up!0

Amazon's discount's gone up, it was only 5% last year!
I'd just get second hand stuff, either out of the bookshop itself (Blackwells on the York uni campus used to have a second hand section) or from Amazon/Play etc. It's what I always used to do."A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge." - Tyrion LannisterMarried my best friend 1st November 2014Loose = the opposite of tight (eg "These trousers feel a little loose")Lose = the opposite of find/gain (eg "I'm going to lose weight this year")0 -

It still is 5% on books, music, DVDs, shoes & accessories, sports & leisure equipment and jewellery & watches. Link here.
The 10% discount post was made in 2007.0 -
With waterstones it changes all year. Some months they give it some they dont.0
