New Rules for Working Tax Credit

Hi. A letter arrived yesterday informing us that the government have moved the goal posts again! From April 2012 to qualify for Working Tax Credits you need to work for a total of 24 hours each week instead of 16 if you are a couple with children. Also changes for folks aged 50 plus. See https://www.hmrc.gov.uk/taxcredits for full details.

  • I think this can be shared between the couple, may be well out here but im quite sure someone will be along to either correct or confirm. I think its better because 16 hour jobs are few and far between (where i am anyway!!) x
The feeling i got when i confirmed my place studying criminology at Exeter Uni was brilliant!!!!!

The pride my children told me they had in me was even better!!!!! # setting positive example to children is OUTSTANDING!!!! !:grouphug::grouphug::smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea

That is 24 hours between you and at least one of you must be working 16hrs.
  • This decision has been common knowledge for months and there are already at least 3 threads on MSE about it!
  • The new rules to come for working tax credits will cause much hardship for some married couples as people working under 24 hours will not be able to claim working tax credits and will be better off on job seekers allowance this will then push unemployment up further.

If a couple are only working for 16 hours between them, they're basically unemployed anyway, whatever effect it has on the statistics.
  • That's silly. Way to make people go to Jobseekers.
  • If a person is working 20 hours a week they are not practically unemployed. Some people in some areas and personal circumstances do not have other work choices this is not something that can be generalised.

If a couple are working 16 hours between them, that's less than a quarter of two full time jobs, which is pretty darn close to both of them being unemployed.

If someone has health problems or caring responsibilities, that's quite different.
