Home Hair Toner

Hello all

I have a bleached blonde pixie crop and I want to get it as white platinum blonde as possible but I'm a bit reluctant to keep paying £15 at the hair dressers, who doesn't really get it white enough anyway!

I'm after the same colour as the guy in the first picture on this page:
http://pearlsandpoison.buzznet.com/user/journal/8052301/thomas-penfound-other-people-amazing/

And the lady in the top picture here: http://www.short-haircutstyles.info/tag/platinum-blond-hair-ideas

My hair dresser usually uses a purple/blue toner and I use Regis silver shampoo everyday at home (similar colour to the picture of the open bottle here: http://imogenfoxylocks.blogspot.com/2011/08/best-shampoo-for-blondes.html)

I'm after a toner I can put on my hair once every few weeks to tone out the yellow-ish hues. I'm hoping there will be a couple of hairdressers on here who can offer me some advice on toning products to use...

Thank you x

If I remember rightly, Manic Panic do a good platinum toner but not used it myself so can't vouch for it? Do you use silver/purple shampoo? I use one from Boots called Pro:Voke and sometimes those Wella Toners & Shaders sachets but my hair is only light blonde, not platinum. It does stop any brassiness though. BTW, I'd avoid that Lee Stafford stuff, it gave my hair a distinctly purple tinge, to the point where people at work were asking, with a really puzzled look on their face, just what I'd done to my hair.

Also, just as a bit of a disclaimer, I'm not a hairdresser and I'm just saying what works for me or what I've heard works well.

    Hi Juice,

Thanks so much for your reply

I've actually just come across Manic Panic on Amazon, which seems to have very very positive reviews.

I use Regis Design Line silver shampoo which is a real dark purple colour and works well at maintaining whiteness when my hairdresser makes it white enough in the first place! I think I have used Pro:Voke in the past and I can't remember having any complaints about it at all! I also tried Touch of Silver, which was a bit rubbish- not dark enough to have any real noticeable effect. I have actually been through most of the silver/purple shampoos on the hig street market!

Any other suggestions or experiences are very very welcome before I take the plunge and order this Manic Panic stuff http://www.amazon.co.uk/MANIC-CLASSIC-Virgin-Semi-Permanent-Colour/dp/B000NSQI4Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1322134050&sr=8-1

hey piggles - snap. I also have very short bleached blonde hair. I dye it myself using a hair lightening/stripping product followed by a platinum blonde dye. In between I use a freida mousse on my hair each morning after washing. it is purple and cuts down the brassiness. I also use the wella toner in ash blonde once a week or so. But take care with this product as it can go purple if you use too much. there is no need to use the whole sachet. it usually lasts three washes for me.

I am always wishing I could get my hair properly white as I am naturally dark headed. What is your secret? I am often left with a slightly yellowish tinge at the roots. it looks ok, but not what I am after.

Piggles. I just looked at manic panic website. thanks for the tip. it looks great. Please let us know how you get on. I am tempted to spend some of my hard earned on this product the next time i bleach my hair.
  • I had VERY white hair for a good few years. I'd recommend toning it with Fudge WhiterShade of Pale (cheap off ebay), and keeping it topped up with Schwarzkopf Touch of Silver shampoo (also cheap). You can forgoe the fudge and just leave the shampoo on for a while initially, if you prefer. I wouldn't recommending washing with the Touch of Silver every single time, because 1. your hair will get quite purple and 2. it's quite drying (last thing bleached hair needs, am I right?!).

I never had much of a problem keeping my hair white/bleaching it very light in the first place because my hair is naturally pale blonde (Scandi/Irish genetics), but I reckon a combo of these too producst plus a decently agressive bleaching will make the stubbornest of hair pretty white! Good luck, let me know how you go!

(If it's of any interest at all, I couldn't hack the expense/faff of bleaching my hair, after a few years, and gave up and returned to my natural colour, the ultimate MSE beauty move...although admittedly not very exciting :p)

  • Oh and Directions by La Riche have a purpley toner too, which I would recommend. It's just called white toner. It's a little more subtle/less long lasting than the Fudge or Touch of Silver.

  • Hi Nzmegs,

Wow, I'd be so scared to bleach my hair at home myself so hats off to you! The Freida mousse looks good... I might have to invest in some! I have the same problem of having yellow-ish roots when I first get my hair bleached. My hairdresser said it's an idea to just work the toner into the roots for a good few minutes. When she has done this it does seem to even out the tone; even if the overall colour isn't what I really want, at least it's even :rotfl:

    Hi Tillyvision,
I have actually used Schwarzkopf Touch of Silver shampoo before but I found it too pale to really have any effect so the brassiness just remained. Perhaps your hair is naturally much lighter than mine so I need a super-strength toner whereas you're okay with a paler one!

I have come across the Fudge toner before but I've read quite mixed reviews so I'm not sure!

Thanks to everyone who's responded! I have ordered a Manic Panic Amplified pot from Amazon for £11 so I'm looking forward to that arriving. Once it's here, I will give it a go and be sure to come on and let you all know. If I can figure out how, I will try and post photographs as well :T

  • Hey Piggles!

I found that shampooing the touch of silver in then bunging a shower cap on it for ten minutes gave a really strong result, have you tried doing that? My hair is quite porous though. The fudge stuff is a bit weak, perhaps, but it does make your hair soft! I wasn't too keen on the Frieda mousse stuff, as I found it hard to apply evenly and would end up with bits that were over and undertoned. As your hairdresser said, try putting the product on your roots first and then later working it through the ends. It's like the opposite of dying your hair, where you would usually put it on the ends first as the closer it gets to your head the quicker it develops!

Would love to see some pics and hear how you get on!

  • Ooooh, I haven't tried the shower cap thing but my hairdresser always puts a shower cap on me in the salon- just for that extra glamour of course!

I might give that a go with some Touch of Silver I have left, thanks for that!

Just had an e-mail from Amazon saying the order's been shipped so hopefully I should be able to try this out early next week and let y'all know

Well if the amazon order is no good try L'Oreal Luo Color in P01 with a very low % or semi-permanent developer. In less than five minutes it takes the brassiness out of white to mid-blonde hair. You can leave it up to 20 minutes but you will get progressively more purple hair after 5 minutes. It was recommended to me by staff at Sallys who use it themselves and it is amazing, the tube was about £10 but I've used it twice and still have more than half left and my hair is passed my boobs. The first time I used it my hair was at the point where it glowed yellowy-orange under changing room lights but was perfectly ash for ~6 weeks after :)
Lee Stafford Beach Blondes is also brilliant, it's a toning shampoo but is so effective you only need to use it once a week at most and it's also a lovely light formula. I wish I could use it more often because it leaves my hair so soft and bouncy!
