extra adsl modem question

I have orange broadband setup on my downstairs pc. I now want to obtain internet access on my upstairs computer that I use very occasionally. I have a phone connection in both of the rooms, so is it possible just to buy another adsl modem and simply connect the other pc up? i.e have a modem upstairs and a modem downstairs.

I have seen adsl modems on ebay going very cheaply but do they work with all broadband providers?

I doubt it. You would have to log into your broadband service twice, which would probably break the Terms of Service. You could either run a cable upstairs, or go wireless.

You could do what you are wanting to do but It would be much easier and better for you to buy a wireless router and wireless network addaptor for the PC upstairs.

The router connects to the adsl line and the pc downstairs via a wired network connection.
The PC upstairs connects wirelessly. As a result both pc can use the conection at the same time. You can also share other resources like printers as you will have a network.
I have installed a few of these for people who got laptops for christmas and wanted wireless. The price was £45 the other week.

Using your proposed method you would need 2 modems and run a cable from the phone point to the pc upstairs to connect your modem to.
the main disadvantage is that you would only be able to use 1 pc for internet at a time.

That's no problem I will only be using one pc at a time anyway.
  • If you have £50 or so spare, a wireless adsl router and adapter will allow you to surf at the same time, and also give you added protection with it's built-in nat/firewall (provided that you encrypt the signal).

Modems are going cheap, because everyone uses routers nowadays, and people sell their old free modem.. if you have any friends with a router, they probably have an old modem stuck on a shelf somewhere.

Why don't you try asking for one then, many people have been given one as a lot of ISP's now give away wireless routers.
