Dell monitor problem

Options
I have a three and a half year old Dell Dimension 2400 with Dell 17" monitor
E171FPb. One moment the display was normal (just surfing the net) then the picture disappeared and I was left with several broad horizontal bands. Bottom bad was lightish green, next band white, then dark green band, then black (or very dark green) band. Now there is just one broad band across the middle made up of narrower green and white lines.
I replaced the monitor with a borrowed one which works fine, so obviously the Dell monitor is at fault; but does anyone know what the problem is or if it is fixable. Thanks

You can get a similar effect by setting the output beyond the range of the monitor.

Try the same monitor in "safe mode", which is 640 x 480, 256 colours.

If it works reset to a slightly higher mode, if not; chuck it and buy a new one.

Thanks johnmc, I think the borrowed monitor I'm using (Proview) is probably of inferior quality to my Dell but it works ok; therefore I think the Dell monitor is cream-crackered.
