Agreed, it won't be easy. But it is just civil proof (balance of probabilities) and it will be the OP's word against .. well... whoever Homebase can find... possibly nobody. The "hinterland" is the way staff are incentivised. Frankly if it went to a hearing I wonder if they'd bother sending anyone for £60.
If the OP is sure if his ground, hopefully a letter setting out what happened might be enough to elicit an acceptable compromise. If the OP did issue a claim form, I can well believe their lawyers would recommend settling.0
