Lonely This Christmas?

Companionship At Christmas 2011

OLDER PEOPLE DON’T HAVE TO BE LONELY THIS CHRISTMAS!

Abbeyfield is inviting older people who might otherwise be alone over the festive season to spend time at an Abbeyfield for a free lunch or even an overnight stay – giving an alternative to older people spending the Christmas holidays alone.

Companionship At Christmas offers a lifeline to lonely people over the celebratory period. We’re urging everyone to take advantage of the support we’re offering by getting in touch to nominate themselves, someone they know or a family member who may be a long distance from their loved ones.

We're asking members of local communities with elderly neighbours living alone, family members in need of respite support and those who plan to spend the Christmas period alone to get in touch with Abbeyfield on 0845 052 3553.

As part of the campaign, we are offering free overnight stays and delicious Christmas lunches throughout the season (24th December – 4th January) across over 120 Abbeyfield sheltered houses in England and Wales.

I heard about this on the Simon Mayo Drive Time show tonight and thought I would post it up in case it affects anyone on this board. They quoted a statistic of, I think, 850,000 people who face Christmas in isolation. A staggering amount.

If you or anyone you know might benefit from this scheme do get in touch with them then there is at least some hope of a Happy (or happier) Christmas.

My Dad will be alone at Christmas this year and every time I think about it, it upsets me. Unfortunately he's not in England or Wales so this wouldn't apply to him.

It is his choice, but I feel he's stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Thinking about anyone who will be alone this year xx
The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.

Yeah...I'm 21 and there is every chance that I will be alone this Christmas.

It's a nice idea though. I hope they still do something like this when I get to 80-odd...just in case.

I hate being on my own!

No one needs to be one their own on Christmas Day. From personal experience, I know there are a great many schemes to which you can offer your time and energies, and then thoroughly enjoy the day! Just Google.
