Good but hardly anyone got a blu ray player this moment in time.
  • Please do not buy Blu-ray or any other high definition player that contains DRM. The quality improvement over DVDs is not noticeable to most people, and the film companies are able to make your player switch to a low resolution mode or fail to play your discs at any time in the future. They are defective by design and we need to stop buying this crap until they get the message.

    I don't get it.
Do all BluRay discs/players have DRM?
How can Sony stop my PS3 from playing my BluRay discs?

DRM = Digital Rights Management. Basically supposed to stop piracy. See this article:

DRM stands for Digital Rights Management

It's to prevent people from pirating or duplicating music/video. Basically if you buy digital music from most online stores (itunes, napster etc..), the file will have DRM within it and there's a check for the necessary rights before the file can be played.

I still don't understand why spantramily is telling people not to buy BluRay movies.
  • oh so i see so does it basically mean if you upload windows vista and then try install a piece of software that is a copy then it wont let it work

    No

Hypothetically if you had a blue ray disc you could only get HD output through approved connecters HDMI etc. And thats only if Microsoft were told to stop this. Vista will play all sorts of copies :j It's just another case of the anti-microsoft brigade.

However I wouldn't update to Vista for a while yet. Let them iron out any bugs.
  • Id be careful theres two high def formats out at the moment and its likely only one will win (Betamax vs VHS if anyone remembers). Its my guess that HDDVD will beat BluRay due to cost, non-proprietry, PIP native, and the !!!!!! industry likes it ;) But seriously at the moment its £450 (£150 with a Xbox 360 HDDVD drive which can be hacked to make it work with a PC) vs £900 for a bluray player. Blu ray has developed a number of bugs and people have been happy with HDDVD.

On the other side Bluray has more companies supporting it and has a larger capacity (however due to the way its used it needs the extra memory ).
