Do I need winter sports insurance in Lapland

The travel agent says I need winter sports cover for our trip to Lapland next week. My annual policy does not cover this but do I really need it if I'm not going to be skiing or snowboarding? Any advice appreciated.

Contact your Annual Policy insurer. Then you have it from the horse's mouth
  • Thanks for replying loobs but prefer to ask on here for some independant advice.

Whatever anyone says on here doesnt really matter though. The only thing that matters is what your current policy says. Are you going to be dog sledding etc? Why not phone your insurer and ask is that covered for example. If you are not going to be doing anything like that then I cant see why youd need it. But thats my opinion and has no bearing on what your insurer would actually pay out for.

What you'll get on here may be independent but will also be likely educated guesses. The travel agent may well have a vested interest in trying to sell you another policy so you're right to question that, but you do need to read your policy to check for inclusion/exclusion of anything you might be doing out there, and if it isn't 100% clear, then check with your insurer. Sports are usually pretty clearly spelt out but something like the dog sledding also sprang to my mind and may not be mentioned. Get it confirmed in a phone call and then follow up by letter or e-mail so you have it in writing
  • We have been to Lapland 3 times before and have never bothered with winter sports cover. We don't ski but we do take part in what the insurers deem to be dangerous activities: dog sleding, sledging and skidoo's.
We are going again this year and have decided not to risk it and have taken out winter cover. I feel that insurance companies have got more strict regarding claims and it's just not worth the risk. Compared to the price of the holiday it's a small price to pay for peace of mind.

Were going to Lapland on the 11.12 and reading this made me check our insurance.

The huskie & reindeer rides are covered under our insurance but the snowmobile isn't - we'd need the extra winter sports cover.
  • extra winter sports cover does not always cover you for snowmobile either so do check with your insurance companies as they all vary

also, take your driving license, you have to have it on you when you drive a snowmobile in lapland
  • Just spoken to my insurers, Ageas and their winter sports cover which is an extra £30 doesn't include cover for me to drive the snowmobile, only as a passenger. He recommended I take out a seperate policy so will now have to search the comparison sites! Thanks to everyone for their replies.
  • Does anyone know if you can just buy the winter sports insurance. Looking on the comparison sites I can only get quotes for a total new policy.
  • Sorted through moneysupermarket and Debenhams essentials. Only £17.49 for the 2 of us and snowmobiling included. Better safe than sorry.
