My son, in Australia has just told me you cannot use a British, or Northern Hemisphere compass in Oz. I think he is taking the xxxx.

A magnetic compass will always align north-south, it's just the way some are made that prevents them from working at their best in the other hemisphere. It's all to do with dipping fields and weighted needles. As long as the needle or disk is free to move, all will be well. Damn, I just bored myself to death, sorry.
