Tax Credit Enquiry

Ok a bit of a circumstance change here, can anyone advise?

I work full time 40 hours per week, wife (until) Sunday works 6 hours a week on a Sunday. We receive Child tax credits (2 children) my wife also attends a college course once a week (2 hours teaching assistant nvq) and is on placement at a primary school 2 days a week.

My wife is leaving her job, too much added stress, to concentrate on college and a better career.

When she leaves will we lose child tax credits?

No, you don't need to be working at all to get child tax credits. In fact they could go up as your income will go down. And as you work full time, if you get WTC that won't be affected either.
  • Excellent, many thanks for reply. Will advise them accordingly once my wife officially leaves.

Out of interest, is there any help for my wife while she studies and effectively volunteers twice a week? Could she claiam some form of job seekers allowance?

Unlikely. Contribution based JSA is the only chance, she won't get income based because you're working full time. If she was only working 6 hours then she probably wasn't getting NI credits - was she working longer hours in previous years? If so it'd be worth asking - but she would need to be seeking work of 16+ hours.
  • Not really worked more then that since we had children around 6 years ago.

In that case no she wont be entitled. Plus she is leaving employment due to too much stress to concentrate on studying so why would she go on jobseekers allowance which is for people looking for full time employment?
