need some help - tax credits.

Hi i'm hoping i'm posting this in the right section!

When our tax credits were up for renewal this year i filled out the form and asked my husband to post it. 2 days before the deadline i clear our car out and find the paperwork in there he had forgot to post it. So I ask him to ring them as i was on my way out the door to work and renew over the phone so we werent late.

He did this all seemed fine i got my new award letter through the post and filed it away. Today i have recioeved a "we are reviewing your account " letter. The letter goes on to say they are reviewing our income as what we declared for last year doesnt match what they have been told by our employer. Our joint income last year 2010/2011 was £41k. But the joint income for this year is going to be lower due to me being a civil servant and we are on an overtime and pay freeze also my husbands over time has been cut for the forseeable future so our predicted income for 2011/12 is 34k.

I told my husband to tell them all of this but what appears he has done is give them just the predicted for this year.

At the moment we are recieving 44.16 per week. What I am concerned about is an over payment and will what we et at the mo be taken off of us? Its what we use to pay nursery.

I spoke to the tax credits people who the letter came from and he seemed to thnk it may balance itself out and our payment may drop by a few quid .

Anyone else been in a simular situation or does anyone know what is going to happen?

thanks in advance

  • I was discussing tax credits with a friend last night. She, like me is on maternity leave, so is probably receiving no more than £8000 per annum. Her hubby is on £28, 850 but they were told they weren't entitled to tax credits (one baby, aged four months). Your £44 sounds high, although I've no experience of this, so I could be wrong!
  • we pay ££114 p/w childcare thatis declared on the award.
  • Does childcare costs mean you qualify for more?
  • you get the childcare element thrown in aswell. so yeah you would get more that someone ont he same wage who doesnt pay for childcare. All our award goes to pay part of our childcare then we top it up with our wages.

If your income this year is what you estimated then what you're getting this year should be right - but your finalised award for last year could be wrong if they were given the wrong figures.

Did you get a lump sum payment of underpaid tax credits for last year? If so you'll probably have to pay some or all of this back.

What was your income in 2009/10?
