transfer minicab no claims bonus onto a private car

my dad has many years no claims bonus on his minicab and he is planning to buying a second car for social use, so he requires a second policy. Unfortunately he has been told that he cannot use his minicab no claims history when taking out an ordinary car policy.

Q1) Are there any companies that will accept his no claims bonus on his minicab?

It seems silly that he cannot get a discount on the premium given he has never claimed in over 20 years! He has a PSV licence and drove a bus full-time for 20 years as well.

Q2) Are there any companies that offer a discount to people that have a PSV licence?

  • You can only use a NCD on 1 policy at a time and given he is looking to have a second vehicle you cannot use it on the private vehicle as he would have to remove it from the cab insurance to do it (and almost certainly the cab insurance is the more expensive).

    The insurers will take into account how many years claim free he has been, this is a separate issue to NCD (as you can have max NCD but have made recent claims if you'd protected the NCD) and doesnt give anywhere near the discount - in fact it is more often avoiding a loading for the claims you'd otherwise have had.

    Some insurers do offer an introductory discount for people with 0 NCD but also being claim free which can equate to up to 1 years NCD but this is automatically applied and you will be seeing it in any quotes he gets.

    There are some occasions that an insurer will allow you to mirror an NCD onto a second vehicle but the cases tend to be fairly specific (eg female ND on spouse policy now getting their own car which is below group X with low annual mileage or existing policy is IOD and now getting second IOD policy as evidently both cars cannot be driven by the only insured person at the same time)

    Your best bet may simply be to speak to the broker for the mini cab insurance and see what strings they can pull given there is an existing relationship;
