What happens when there are over 30 children in a reception class?

I know that it is difficult to deal with more than 30 children in a class, but it isn't always bad.
I know it is a long, long time ago, but when I started school (in 1948) classes were huge - I understand that there were 40 of us in 1 class - but, whether by good luck or good teaching, I know that when it came time to take the 11+ exam, all bar 3 pupils in my large class passed through to grammar schools. And with only 1 teacher per class - no T/As or student teachers.
Or maybe we were afraid of the teachers0 -

Schools/children/teachers are completely different now.....they are different from when I started school in 1984!
I think the fear factor is an interesting point, and potentially explains alot....0 -
Most likely scenario is that 2 children have successfully appealed.
In that case, then the children will be what is called 'permitted exceptions' for one academic year, so nothing needs to be done. After this, the school will have to take qualifying measures- ie hire an extra teacher and create an extra classroom, if there is still more than 30 in a class.
In reality, if it's only one over, most head teachers will hope that in the year for which the child counts as a permitted exception someone will leave, taking it back down to 30.Little Lowe born January 2014 at 36+6
