If you read the original post, the family member is arriving in 2 days' time, and staying until the end of January - over 8 weeks.
I'd be concerned that that did place the property in the realms of HMO territory and I would be advising the LL.0 -

The original post talks about a short while and the OP only suspects it may end up being till the end of January.Save £200 a month : [STRIKE]Oct[/STRIKE] Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr0 -

They're worried she might stay until then.
I'd maybe see what happens before I rushed to inform the landlord. IMO having a family member from abroad for a week is OK - not an ideal situation in a cramped house, but bearable for a week.0 -
Best sorted out internally if possible. So
* step 1 is see how long she's staying
* speak to the other tenants - do they feel as you do? Are you on the same side? Safety in numbers!
* see what effor she makes to contribute to costs/cleaning etc
* if it seems she's staying too long and/or not contributing, then ideally the 3 other tenants sit down with tenant 4 and have friendly chat: "this isn't working - your mum needs to contribute cash, clean, move out" - whatever you decide
* If THAT fails, THEN try the landlord
* And is THAT fails, time to start house-share hunting as nothing will work!0 -
update
her mum staying for a few months and her cousins (not sure how many but at least 2) are coming over soon to stay a few months too. they will be all staying in the same double room.
my bf did get his friend and brother stay for his bday which made his week not seen him this happy for a while
my bf and other housemates have informed the landlord about these people stay and he is not happy as he was not informed about these people staying (she told other housemate she informed the landlord and he was fine about it)0 -
Three more people staying for a "few months"? That's is p!ss-take if ever I heard one. One family totally outnumbering the other tenants, too. I think they should all go and get their own flat together. And be charged half of the total rent while they do it. I'm glad that they've got the landlord involved. Let's hope he issues a S21 and gets rid before the all rest of this family show up.0

Couldn't agree more.
The original tenant plus 3 more people in one double room is serious overcrowding. It also takes the number of people in the house from 4 to 7.
Your bf has done the right thing in checking with the LL, who is now potentially in difficulties regarding HMO rules, numbers of toilets / bathrooms etc.
I'd certainly be wanting to make sure that the utility bills are fairly shared out, particularly if the current tenants are out of the house during the day and the visitors stay indoors most of the time.0 -
My bf thinks she got given the options of put her mum in a hotel or leave and by the sound of it she going a week tomorrow0

Oh good. That sounds very sensible. I just hope that the new person sharing is a bit more sensible and considerate than the one going.0
