Something that's removeable (eg ply fixed with screws) .. if you intend to leave the slates as they are. Had a Yorks stone roof on my garage with pegs / mortar on the inside -- and you have to do maintenance from that side if any slide / leak. So a permanent cover isn't sensible.

There are some companies that will foam spray the inside (direct onto the underneath of the tiles) to both seal / insulate / waterproof .... but not sure (other than price) how satisfactory / permanent it is?
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

Common opinion is to steer well clear of this stuff as it can create more problems that it fixes. Do a bit of research before you go down this route.

I recommend Kingspan or similar its a insulated board that is very light and has good insulation properties. We just stuck (where we couldnt get access to) or screwed the boards to the joists, leaving space netween the joists and the slates so as to not rot the joists and allow air to flow.
  • where is kingspan available from, an is it expensive

I got mine from local builder merchant, MKM, think it was £44 for 11 sheets that was a couple of years ago.
