Photo in company brochure??

  • Can't you just be sick when you know they are doing the photos?
  • My last company sometimes took photos of the new starters and put them, among other things, in a monthly newsletter. If you worked at HQ then you generally got collared for this but other sites usually avoided it. Unfortunately, because it was public sector, these newsletters were also posted on the intranet. Because I have quite an unusual surname (I am the only one on FB), if you googled my first name and surname, this newsletter was the first entry that appeared. It meant my photo, my workplace, my contact details and my job were all readily available for the world to see simply by googling my name.

I requested that my photo be removed, which they finally did but only after I had to make a bit of a fuss about my privacy.

OP, as you are just in admin, I think it is perfectly reasonable that you don't want your photo is some PR brochure. I don't think you have much argument with the notice board, but for media going outside the company, then you should have a choice.

Thanks for all the interesting replies and the suggestions of why people might not want their photo shown. Apart from not liking having my photo taken at any time, even for family events, I just can't see the point of putting it into sales material. I agree it is useful for clients coming for a meeting to see who people are and putting a board in reception is OK.

We are being asked to supply our own photo so I have found one of me with short hair so I look a bit different and I shall ask if they will leave me out of the brochure.

I'd say I do not have one, sorry.

Of course some people object to having their photo taken on religious grounds (although they make exception for legal documents, unsurprisingly).

If I was asked to supply my own photo, I'd have great difficulty finding a recent one (honestly!) suitable for use at work.

This time last year I was off sick when the staff photo used on our Christmas greetings was taken. One of my colleagues was so well muffled up in hat and scarf that I had absolutely no idea who it was!

A sure-fire way of NOT getting your photo in the brochure is to do two thumbs up with a beamy smile (think McCartney) - it usually scares graphic designers and photo editors right off, for the press at least ;-)
  • I'ld be tempted to keep "forgetting" to bring in your photo.

Not sure if this is the right board but...

My company wants to put a head and shoulders shot of all the staff in a company brochure and on a notice board in reception. I am a very private person and object to this but have been told I have no choice. Do I have to agree to this and supply a photo?

You don't have to agree to it, and of course they can't exactly sack you for refusing to give them a photo, But I can't see what all the fuss is about ? Shouldn't you be happy that they wan't you in part of their brochure ? Even if you are a private person it's only a picture at the end of the day ?

It's possible to be flattered to be asked without wanting to say yes.

Some people don't regard a picture as "only". You might not agree but its up to them how they feel. While I wouldn't go as far as the OP, my personal feelings are closer to theirs than to "its only a picture..."
