Sadly, as the cost of motoring goes up, so people still undertake ever more road journeys.
That trend will only get worse with even more journeys in the future. Reason being more and more shops are going bust, high streets are becoming ghost streets and more and more out of town shopping complexes are being built to make life easier for the big traders.
Add to that the fact that many companies are also on the move, centralising various departments, and trying to cut costs and it will only get far worse.
We're in serious danger of becoming slaves to cars and debt.. although most folk already are anyway, its just going to get worse.
What none of our politicians realise is that cutting everything or spending every last penny on useless tripe doesn't work. We need proper investment, proper transport infrastructure and proper money producing industries other than banking. Of course they've woken up and realised this too late after their obsession with computer screens that make money and now we're in a vicious cycle of negative equity where doing anything to get ourselves out of this scrape is almost useless.0 -
What's with this trend to nonsense the original claim with anecdotal denials not backed up by figures or evidence? If you want to check their figures I'm sure you could find the details and make an informed case.
Anyone who claims they are running a car for £1,300pa including insurance, depreciation, breakdown cover, maintenance and taxes is either leaving it in their garage or innumerate. It looks pretty pathetic too, like someone trying to 'win' by bragging about how much money they make / can save.
Personally running my 8 year old hatchback (~18k miles pa) is costing in the region of £4,750. Based on that I don't think their calculation is too far out for a newer car.
Car 1
Insurance £186

Total £2841

15,000 miles at 55mpg, £1730
Total £2022
Car3

5,000 miles at 45mpg, £650
Total £1380

Mot £50

Total £480
Car5
Insurance £285
Tax £215
Mot £50
1500 miles at 25mpg, £380
Total £930
Total overall £7653
Garage costs about £250
Oil, filters, pads, about £100
Other bits about £250
AA £80
depriciation of car 1 was written of on business costs, and more than covered by mileage as well.
car 2 was bought for £400 over 4 years ago, isn't even £100 ayear, and will be a positive income if we just scrap it.
3 and 4 are classics, and had one over 25 years, the other is currently worth more than we paid.
5 is a motorhome, it doesn't depricate by much, but the cost of a hotel outweighs it each year.
I'm being generous with the other bits as well.
overall £8333, so yes, a tad over maybe.0 -

I've got an F1 scaletrix it doesn't mean that I can use it as an example to counter a reasonable calculation of the cost of running a car in something approaching normal circumstances.
The point was never that you're costs were wrong (though it seems they were) it was that you were comparing something irrelevantHaving a signature removed for mentioning the removal of a previous signature. Blackwhite bellyfeel double plus good...0 -
No idea what you're on about, but you can include another £500 a year it doesn't cost me in depriciation if you want to.
Still, I'm sure you pay a lot more, and you're happy that way if it suits you.0 -
. I have friends in Southern Africa for instance, who have owned the same car for over ten years and never had an MOT like test done in that entire time! .
In SA the law requires you to MOT the car only when you sell it (or it use to be when I lived there for a while a decade ago), so they have done nothing illegal, however the safety of vehicles should be the least of your worries when driving there:eek:Five exclamation marks the sure sign of an insane mind!!!!!
