To be honest, I dont think refurbs are much of a bargain. They dont appear to be much cheaper than new ones on special offer, and probably have poor batteries. Id suggest that you keep a look out on the Grab It board myself, but if you do find a real bargain, let us know. :D

  • well I was thinking that, but even a second hand one would be fine. I was hoping that with Vista being launched, the old ones would've been reduced.

As for spec, basic is fine really, he's new to computers, so wouldn't want to baffle him.

Then again 'silver surfers' don't seem to get on so well with laptops due to the screen size, maybe also budget for a 19" monitor.

I've used "IT Dealers" in the past, and found them to be quite competitive in price, and also helpful when problems occur.

You could use their website as a guide to prices:
    https://www.itdealers.co.uk

In an industry where it can be difficult to get support after you've purchased a new product, its quite refreshing.

I've no connection with them, other than as a happy customer.

there are 2 types of refurbs, the ones where somone buys a laptop and doesnt like the colour/ software setup etc and returns this and these are fine. then there are the ones who have passed the manufactures QC and still get returned as faulty, often with internitant faults which are hard to detect and even harder verify they have been repaired.

now since its highly unlikely you will be able to know what reason it was returned the product has to be substansialy cheaper to cover the hassle of you losing data, expenses sending it back etc to be repaired. most refurbs arent worth it and in general i would say the 5-10% saving is usually a false ecconomy.

for a larger screen you may want to consider something like a toshiba p20 etc multimedia laptop they have 17" hidef screens and should start about £400 mark second hand they are big heavy beasts but with 3ghz processors 2.5 hours battery life and all the trimmings like wifi, remotes, dvd burner and svideo out make great value for money if you are planning on digital photo etditing etc.

The laptop has been great and was much cheaper than an equivalent new one

    Hope this helps
