Signing off JSA

Hi, I'm in the happy position of being able to sign off JSA soon. I'm next due to sign on 1st December and I start work on 5th December. I have a number to phone in order to sign off, what will happen when I call? Will I be asked to prove when I'm starting? Also, I think I will get paid JSA up until 4th December, is that correct? If I tell them now will I have to wait until my normal payment date to get paid or will it be done earlier?

Thanks

  • First of all congratulations on the new job!

When I signed off, I went in on my normal signing day- if I did not they told me that JSA would not be paid for that period.

They asked me to take in my job offer letter to confirm start date. Then the day I started work (just to make sure no changes in the offer!!!) I completed the 'start work' form and posted it to JC.

I got my payment on the usual day, adjusted to take into account that I was only entitled to 5 days rather than 14.

So do remember to go and sign on- you are signing partly for a retrospective period and don't want to miss out.
  • I'm trying to sign off (so I can go self-employed), but the telephone numbers given by the local jobcentre always seem to be permanently engaged - does anyone know the times that the people manning the 01903 numbers work?

Apparently the declaration forms are no longer filled it - it all has to be done by telephone...
  • I signed off in August- so has it changed since then?

I had to send my form through the post.

Thanks for the replies, it does seem they give conflicting advice. I was told when I was in the job centre that I should phone and not send in the form, and that I could do it in advance - meaning I would not have to go in to sign on again next week. But I don't want to do that and end up losing out, the first month is going to be hard enough already!

    Looks like it...

    Certainly is...
  • Hi OP, Many many congrats on the job offer. Spookily I too am in the position of having found a job to start on 5th December and needing to sign off before then. However, I went to sign on today so I can pass on what I was told in case this helps. I was told to ring the number we've been given five working days or less before I want to sign off (so that would be Mon 28th Nov or after for both of us). I would then get paid until I start work on the 5th. The complication for you of course is that you would normally sign on the 1st whereas having gone in today I wouldn't sign on again before the 5th anyway. If I was you I would ring to sign off before the 1st and see if that means you don't need to go in on the 1st. Hope this helps and best of luck with the new job.
  • Thanks eeyore, and good luck to you too.

What time did you phone 'em ? I just get a constant engaged tone no matter when I phone - and they dont ring back either...
  • Hope this will help . . . I went for my final Sign On date today, I start my new job on Monday.

My PA processed my Sign On as usual and then did her part of closing it down, she took me across the office to see another member of staff who did the rest of the form filling there and then in front of me.

You will be paid up to the day before your new job starts & your P45 will be sent to your home address within 5 -7 working days

OP + eeyore good luck in your new jobs.

When I signed-off, I was told to phone. This was April. They did tell me never ever sign off JSA until you have walked in the door of your new employers and signed a contract.
