New modem router advice required please...

Options
Hi all,

My trusty Netgear DG834GT has died on me after 8+ years of faultless service, so I'm in the market for a suitable replacement, that will provide the same sort of future proofing.

I've seen the Netgear DGND3700, which looks like it fits the bill, but is a little pricier than I'd like.

I've also seen 2 Belkin routers which could do the job, but I'd like to know which is best really.

There's the Belkin Play Max N600 HD (model F7D4401uk), which is around £100 and looks the bees.

Then there's the Belkin 2.0 N600 Dual Band Modem Router.

Or perhaps a Billion BiPAC 7800N?

Which of these would you recommend? Or, if you're aware of another stand-out modem router at this price band, I'd love to know!

Thank you.

  • I also depends on whether you wish to be able to change certain parameters that one's ISP foist on to you. But having said that I guess it also comes down to Wireless Range/Speed and wall thickness etc, and whether you need Wireless or not , and also do you wish for Gigabit Ethernet.

some things to bear in mind...

    1. the GT could use DMT, Routersdtats or DGTeam firmware to tweak your snrm ergo your line speed. DMT and RS also provide line monitoring capabilities - are either of these features important to you ??

    2. Belkin routers are poo ;)

    3. Future proofing - none of the routers you mention there will do VDSL, the modulation method used in Fibre-based broadband, which is going to be the future for probably the majority of the country over the next 5-10 yrs, if not sooner if you're lucky enough to be in an area that's done/about to be done. If you're looking at staying on ADSL for a while, ebay is great for used GT's and D-Link 2640B's (same chipset as GT, better wifi, still use DMT/routerstats) from a few quid upwards. Especially if you don't need N-standard wifi, I'd be picking up a couple of used ones off ebay for no more than £30 the pair and they should keep you going for several more years yet :)
