So how much did this incompetent trainee grease monkey charge you to wreck your engine?

Probably some too-good-to-be-true figure like £100.

Having said that, I did once get one done for less than that at a proper garage. Ok it was a backstreet garage and the bloke was my neighbour but he still did it for me at a good cost.

I'd never trust a mobile mechanic though for anything other than a diagnosis of whats wrong. I used one years ago for this. He came out and diagnosed the head gasket had blown within seconds (which the dealer with their computers and qualified techs etc all missed). The moment he started saying he could repair it but the odds were the engine was now duff and it would blow up within a couple of years I knew he was a cowboy and told him I'd think about it. Nice enough bloke and he seemed very hot on diagnosing faults but he seemed to have a dodgy vibe about him when it came to repairs.
