Pet Porte Catflap

Greetings

I know there is another thread on these electronic catflaps but it is sooo long I thought I'd start another

Thing is we've had 2 of them fail in quick succession

The company were very responsive when the first one failed and sent a replacement promptly. However after a few weeks that one has also broken.

Before going back to them I wondered if anyone else has had one that's worked well? (I get the feeling that they are too complicated and can fail too easily)

We've got 2 increasingly large rescue kittens who are basically feral - bless - so I'm not worried about intruders. But i am concerned about them being locked in - when they want to do their business in the garden (God that took a while to achieve !) or that they get locked out and traumatised.

Any feedback appreciated

Thanks

  • I bought one via Amazon after reading alot of reviews all over the net. On Amazon twenty five people out of the thirty seven that reviewed it on there gave it five stars, some four etc. A couple gave it one star..

I`m getting fed up with the ginger cat from across the road coming thru our cat flap, tried the magnetic cat flap but our`s hate collars. One collar lasted less than twenty hours. I`ll let you know how we get on once the pet porte is fitted. At the moment we`ve stopped leaving food out bar a small amount of IAMs to discourage the ginger git

i`v had mine now just over 2 months and so far so good, i had a infra red one before this one and this one is by far the better of the 2. mines used a lot daily 4 cats 1 in and out constantly lol! and she even broke the door on my old one running at it! so far so good. i had 5 replacements for the infra red one in the 3 years i had it, staywell are fab at dealing with replacements hence i bought from them again ;)
  • I really like my smartflap, but I'm willing to do a bit of DIY on it, and fix it when the locking tabs come off their mechanism.

It's not perfect, it won't stop a determined cat that is willing to take a run at full pelt from 20ft away, as this causes the locking tabs to come adrift inside the flap.

However, being able to lock the cats in when it gets dark, and let them out when it is light is brilliant!
  • Thanks guys

yes the latest problem is the locking thing. The spring broke on it

I was going to ignore it But sadly one of the little lads has just been killed by a fox and now I'm worried the fox might get into the catflap

(we're in London and I guess the fox is the one we see in the garden. Jerry was caught outside but I'm concerned for Ben, the surviving brother. )

does anyone know if foxes can get through catflaps ?
