British gas boiler prices

In July 2011 I understand B Gas put up the price of boiler installation by £600. Now in Nov 2011 they are offering £400 off a new boiler ! A net increase of £200 ! They must have spent a fortune advertising this £400 discount on the TV, is this just another example of buyer beware ? Comments from B Gas welcome.

I had BG give me a quote in July/august, the price was about £3500, this was to replace the boiler with a condensing one and move it from the kitchen into the loft, (Worcester boiler) this came with a one year warranty, I contacted a local Worcester recommended installer for the same work to be done, he actually suggested a different boiler (still Worcester) which would actually cope with the size of my house, (he told me the BG rep was selling me a boiler which would struggle to heat the house and heat the hot water at the same time!!.....

And his quote? £2400!!...

What I did`nt know is that all Worcester boilers come with a six year warranty free!!, all you need to do his have it serviced every year by the Worcester registered installer, so I have cancelled my BG service care agreement and have saved about £1200, it will cost me £60.00 per year for a service, so I reckon I will be £900, better off.

Whoops also forgot to mention that my boiler was rated as an F, I went to the energy savings trust and and also got a cheque from them for £400, because I was changing the boiler to a more efficient one.

British Gas by and large are incredibly expensive and offer very poor value for money. The £400 off is just nonsense as they first raised the price to ridiculous levels.
On average, BG will quote at least £1000 more than I do, and I certainly don't do budget installs, but only high end top quality with a considerably higher spec than BG.
Just about every local independent will be a lot less expensive than BG, and often better too.
