the bills arrived!!

Options
Hi

we've just got our gas and electric bill and its not good!! Can someone advise on the best way to cut our consumption. We have the heating on for an hour in the morning and 5 hours in the evening, and the water is on twice a day for a few hours at a time. Ive heard that if you leave the hot water on "constant" its cheaper! is this right?

thanks

    Welcome to the forum.

The answer to your question is a resounding NO

If you do a search you will find several references to that 'Urban Myth'.
  • You need to think about how you can get maximum benefit from heating e.g. is your house well insulated. Options like cavity wall insulation are good way to reduce your heating bills. however, if you don't want i have a big outlay in installation costs, there are other cheaper quick fix options such insuring there are no drafts, you have a decent pair of curtains to keep out the cold etc. This way, you won't need to have the heating on for 5 hours a day in the afternoon. am sures theres a millions of ways to insulate your house which you could easily research into using the internet etc

i barley have my heating on for 2-3 hrs during the entire day as this is plenty for me. i don't bother to have heating in the morning as i have leave the house relatively quickly once i leave the bed. its better to have the heating on in the afternoon when i actually in the house longer enough to benefit from it. This point depends on whether your are at home during the day etc. My gas bill typically comes in at £80-100 per quater (2 people living in a semi detached 3 bed house)
  • yes to thermostat on watertank and yes for radiators too!!
  • i only have my hot water on for 1 hour a day(2 1/2 hour times as ds needs shower each morning(bed wetting) and dh likes a bath most evenings that i share) and i just use cold water for washing machine

i used to only have it on for 1/2 hour in morning(6:00am) till bet wetting started and was still hot enough in evening for bath(10:30pm)
i have an intermittant connection so sorry if i dont reply straight away

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton
