Just noticed that my desktop icons have had smaller picture icons added to them - see attached picture for "P", Fish and ?Rose. I've scanned for viruses and checked the process manager for unexpected programs, but can't see anything obvious. I've not installed anything recently, but my PC rebooted itself sometime today when I wasn't at the keyboard.

Anyone recognise these before I panic?

Just ran a scan with HJT and can't see anything obvious. Anyone see anything they don't think should be there?

You could wait for the Microsoft Indian call centre they are pretty good from what I gather and only charge about £150.00 for virus protection,
Mine changed when I added Google chrome and messed up my pc so I got rid of it ?0 -
Not quite sure what you mean - MS virus protection is free, but I've got NIS.Jumbo

Aye sorry poor joke, do you have google chrome if so get rid if you are using windows 7 that is,0

I think your Icon cache has become corrupted. Google 'rebuild icon cache vista' and there are several explanations of how to fix it. You may want to check the Event Viewer to find out what caused the reboot.Give a man a fish, and you'll feed him for a day.
But give a man a fishing rod, and he'll sell it and buy alcohol.0 -
Thanks for that Moneybagsss
Looking through event viewer, there was a critical error with kernel power when the PC failed to hibernate. The UPS kicked in during work on the electrics and should send a hibernate command to the PC while there's enough power for it to hibernate - I might need to check the battery's still OK if it didn't last long enough. That explains the reboot.
Smaller icons had gone this morning without any intervention, so I'll leave rebuilding the cache unless it happens again. I've had a look at the process - it isn't complicated but seems a bit brutal.
I was seriously worried I'd got a malware or spyware on my system, though I suppose they wouldn't broadcast it like that...Jumbo

tbh, from the hjt log there's some distincty dodgy-looking things going on in there
download, update and full scan with Malwarebytes, delete all it finds and post the log

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0
