Advice of what a personal statement for social work should included

Options
I have to write a personal statement for social work Ba and don't know where to start.

I currently work for social services and had lots of experience with service users.

I find it hard to draw out my experience and put it in writing and I don't want to go on too much.

Any tips?

  • Already having the experience puts you ahead already.

try to categorise your skills e.g.

Skills to do specifically with the job (appreciation of policies/working in difficult situations)
Personal skills (team work, time keeping, working with people at all levels)
Why you think the ba will benefit (yourself/service users/future employers)

Just an idea, I'm not sure which statments appy to you most.

    Good luck!

everything he last poster said, and make sure your commitment to anti oppressive practice and confidentiality show, good luck:D
  • You need to emphasis why you want to study social work and why you feel that this is the right course for you. Talk about what you have done already eg personal experiences, work experience - esp add any voluntary work you may have done as this always shows that you are committed (if you will work for nothing then you will work even harder for a wage) Tell them what it is about social work that you aspire to and what qualities you feel that you have to offer as a social worker. Sell yourself!!!

Good luck with it, I am a first year student social worker and I love it ;)

  • I'd definitely recommend reading Neil Thompson's Understanding Social Work because it summarises a lot of the important things you'll be covering, especially Anti-Oppressive Practice
  • hey, http://thestudentrooms.com is a great source for application help =) Theres a PS forum where you can submit your PS when you have a rough draft. No one can see it other than yourself and the "PS helpers" who are people selected because of their experiances etc. They can give feedback on your PS and suggest improvements =) The rest of the forums are good for general student/application information too =)
