Have you chatted with your family to see if anyone has some old furniture/stuff to spare... you may be surprised :-)
    I'd check the garage/attic first.

I'd look for a fridge/freezer and a washing machine first, it is really annoying to do without.

If you cannot afford to buy everything at once it is ok to just have a mattress at first, then buy the rest of the bed later...

IKEA has a nice starter set of crockery etc. I'd recommend them for furniture, bedding etc. as well.
  • You need a bed and as mentioned a fridge/freezer and washing-machine. Anything else depends on what saving you have and what family, friends and work-colleagues are willing to donate.

Freecycle and ebay can be great places to source things to tide you over.
  • ok brilliant thanks we are lucky I have my bed which we will be taking and have a few basic bits and no we are being given crockery ect for Xmas as you say u
it might have to be a case of just buying a few bits and the buying a few more as we can afford them thanks for the ikea tip thats much appreciated
  • A new flat - how lovely.

There's nothing wrong with getting second hand things to start with. As well as saving you money it will allow you to try things out and to see what you really like/want/need when you are in a position to buy new things.
I need to make a new list for 2014
think of something to put on it!:rotfl:
Try harder for 2014 as I never managed it in 2012 or 2013
  • Try joining Freecycle/Freegle. You can get a fair amount second hand for nothing from people.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
  • Freecycle is definitely worth first try... you can also posted 'wanted' ads for things you need. As others said, it doesn't matter too much if it's second hand and you can replace things with new as you go along :)

A list of things off the top of my head:

    kettle
    plates etc
    bottle opener
    can opener
    scissors
    hoover
    seats for living room
drawers or plastic boxes to keep clothes in
    fridge and freezer
    toaster
    saucepans

you could try googling some search terms, I'm sure there will be a list somewhere of stuff you need to live somewhere!
