    TimBuckTeeth is right, this is either Peziza domiciliana or P. cerea, and it does not grow unless there is damp. Most of the fungus will be unseen and growing in the substrate, which I assume is wood, but they can grow on mortar, cement etc, and that will be rotten. Any rotten wood will need replacing if it is structural.

    The nightmare continues - there's a damp patch on the downstairs loo ceiling and a row of little brown buds where it joins the wall.

    Will call a plumber in the morning...

    Just to finish off the story, I called Homeserve on Sunday and they came straight out, found a leak in the cistern, stopped it and went. I still have the buds downstairs and damp patch on ceiling but this should now start drying out.
