What to do with those little people.

Being a sort of SAHM is a bit alien to me really, with my other children they were either in Nursery or at a child minder from about 6 months onwards, then they had their funded nursery at 3 then off to school so I didnt really have them a lot during the day.

I have since changed jobs a few time, had a period of unemployment whilst pregnant with ds2 and now he is 9 months I have managed to slot my work around the kids in the evening/weekends and the odd 2/3 days a week.

The trouble is I am running out of ideas of things to do with ds2, we have played on the mat with some toys, he has had a bounce in his jumperoo, I chased him around the floor on my hands and knees and nappy change time pretending to try and eat his leg (he finds this hilarious) he has had breakfast, we took the other kids to school....its 10am and I am stuck for idea's.

What to do with a 9 month old?? Apart from blowing raspberries at each other like we have been for the last 5 mins, my cheeks hurt!

  • Cuddle up with a book or a bit of cbeebies, then repeat all of the above until he goes to sleep! They're simple creatures with simple likes and needs at that age.

Just go where you want to go and bring him along. Most babies love being taken around shops/museums/parks etc.

Any baby groups near by? I dunno how i would live if i was alone all day with my 8 month old..well im not home all day with her at all a i work ft and have other commitments but on the times we do get mornings or afternoons together we always make our way to the local sure start group. Really its from a selfish point of view as i love chatting to the other mums and have made good friends we often do house play dates now and take it in turns but they do have good activities for the younger ones sign and sign messy play (no way is my 8mo putting paint on her feet at home with a cream carpet lol) musical play.... goodness the list goes on and on. IMO its also good for them to interact with others of a simular age

If you cant get to a group then i dunno what to suggest apart from what you are doing really. We do have a box with various fabrics and textures and sounds in that we paly with a lot and my youngest dd loves the mini ball pool we have at home - infact i often get a stolen 5 mins to myself whilst shes in the ball pool! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

TBH at this age you can do what you want and they just happen to be there lol

Bricks and noisy toys are popular with my 9 month old at the moment - building towers and knocking them down, banging saucepans with wooden spoons etc...

Finding a toddler group where they can explore is invaluable (for both of you!)

teach him now how to tidy, treat it as a game, see if it catches on before he turns into a hormonal teen :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

  • Play percussion (bash things with a beater or wooden spoon, rattle things) sing nursery rhymes, read books (or catalogues, mine adored the mini boden catalogue, you don't have to buy!), do some cooking/chores while he "helps". Go for walks. Make a mess with paint.

You're not a bad mum at all!! Sadly my child was always going to be an only child so l knew he had to learn to play on his own (l was there supervising before anyone jumps to conclusions l hadn't gone down the pub!). Learning to amuse yourself is something that children need to learn too.

    Happy moneysaving all.

Have you got a Sure Start centre or anything similar near you? I found mine invaluable when my son was that age, we did all sorts, groups, baby massage, courses, toy library etc.
Be who you are, say what you feel, those who mind don't matter, those who matter don't mind.
