mileage and insurance

just had to claim on my insurance and when I went to the asessor I noticed he took a picture of the dash with the mileage. I assume this is for records but when I got home I checked my policy and I noticed I have quoted 13,000 miles and have gone over that.

What I want to know is will this have any effect? It is an estimated mileage and I will up it at renewal (end of march) but how would they know how many miles it had on the clock? It is only a bit over and it is an estimate on the policy, can't find anything in the booklet or on the website about about mileage. Should I phone and tell them?

Depends if you have gone massively over I would say. If it is only slightly then you should be fine, particularly as you stated just over avergae milleage anyway.

If your car is a write off then mileage affects the valuation.

tahnks for replies. bit bullet and called insurance co. they said unless massively over it wouldn't be a problem. Will up at renewal in March. they also said claim had been logged and was going through so hopefully no problems

How would they know how many miles you have done in the year? unless you insured the car from new then the only way they could tell is by looking at the MOT certificate and doing a few estimations.

If you had it MOTed 3 months ago, and done 5,000 miles since then they could assume you do 20,000 miles pa. Otherwise I doubt they will be able to tell.

It is by estimation, getting info from MOTs/ DVLA and general discussions with policyholders (it is amazing the amount of information people will unwittingly give if you get a well trained telephone person using certain questioning techniques)

  • don't worry if they query the mileage you have done ,they cannot prove you drove all those miles ,perhaps some one else in your family has driven the car on a regular basis thus pushing you estimated mileage up (get my drift)
