Collecting at the Door
firstly, sorry if this is the wrong place.
i get alot of charities knocking on the door for me to sign up to donating.
i dont mind, but at 8.45pm it is taking the p p, especially when the young girl gets told its too late for calling, to then be hit with 'well we licenced until 9pm'.
i do have a no cold callers sign on my front door, does anyone know if these people come under this?

Most fundraisers have a licence given to them by the local council(with the permission of the police)to knock on doors until 9pm,after this it becomes illigal.
I dont want to get into the pros and cons of this typeof fundraising(unless you really want to!)but it is without doubt the most cost effective and lasting way of raising funds for people less fortunate than ourselves.
As for the ''No cold callers'' signs I seem to recall a few years ago all door to door activity was nearly outlawed until The Queen stepped in and said charities will be able to continue this way of fundraising no matter what laws come into play as it is a too important revenue stream to lose for them.
Hope this clears a few things up.If organized religion is the opium of the masses, then disorganized religion is the marijuana of the lunatic fringe.0 -

I hope you got the name of the charity and started burning ears at your local council then - That is utterly unacceptable by any standards!
They have no more right to knock on your door uninvited than I do and TBH, a NCC cign means very little legally. However you are fully entitled to send them away with a flea in their ear and a clear and unequivocal instruction to never bother you again.
It can take a while but you can stop being seen as a soft touch and turn them off!0 -
There were several threads, over the past couple of years, regarding charity collectors calling and asking the householder to sign up for regular contributions.
The threads all suggested that the first few monthly donations made, actually were passed on to the collectors as a form of commission. I don't know whether that is true or not but I would not sign up to that.
Just because the person at the door has a badge and some printed paperwork - all of which are easy to reproduce at home these days - does not mean they are actually working for a charity on the day they call on you.
By signing up, you are giving them your name, address, phone number, full bank details and a copy of your signature plus any other info they can glean while chatting to you. What a wonderfully simple way of stealing someone's identity.0 -

They have every right as its their job and either they or there team leader/manager will have a document showing their entitlement to knock any door in a given postcode. If you were to do the same thing(for any reason)you would be breaking several laws.
As for not being seen as a soft touch and 'turning them off' its never going to happen.Do you think after they have knocked on your door and youve ''sent them away with a flea in their ear'' they tell the rest of the organisation/charity/other charities not no knock on your door?If organized religion is the opium of the masses, then disorganized religion is the marijuana of the lunatic fringe.0 -

Well actually no, they won't. They have no "right" to go around knocking on doors. Once a householder tells their organisation that they are unwelcome, this withdraws any implied 'right' of access and means that they are trespassing if they go onto your property after that point. No amount of "bits of paper" and "its their job" will change that.If you were to do the same thing(for any reason)you would be breaking several laws.As for not being seen as a soft touch and 'turning them off' its never going to happen.Do you think after they have knocked on your door and youve ''sent them away with a flea in their ear'' they tell the rest of the organisation/charity/other charities not no knock on your door?If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -
The chuggers are not welcome at my house. I give to charity I just gave today to Lions club and I give money when it suits me not made to feel guilty or harassed into signing a DD form so they get paid commission. I dont agree with it its about time this whole scheme was outlawed, its a shame our politicians dont have the balls to do it. Its a reason I dont like going into town for fear of being made to feel guilty by them trying to avoid them where I can
I also made a donation a few weeks back to local hospice and I will do that every year as my xmas donation along with giving unwanted items0 -
thx for your replies guys.
i give to charity shops and if i was to win alot of money i would buy items for a charity, as most of the money they get goes to admin. hubby saw an advert for a charity shop manager, and the wages stated "with bonus" hth can a charity pay people a bonus.
for those that dont like having a tin shook in their face, by law they shouldnt rattle the tin, i learnt this years ago.0 -
Non of these people work for the charities they collect for, nor do they give a stuff about the cause, they are there because they work for a chugging agent and if they get you to sign a direct debit, they get some bonus.
Anyone who cares for a charity, gives up free time, not goes chugging.
Luckily My spaniel has a zero tolerance on chugging and zero tolerance on the causes of chugging...Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
I always say I am not prepared to give money or to sign up to any agreement to give money.0
