10. Go into control panel, and uninstall any IE toolbars, updaters, googleupdate, aol software, any old printer/phone/camera/usb modem software which you no longer use, anything else that you don't use - pay particular attention to software that appears in your hijackthis log, especially the O4 section.

If you have a java icon in control panel, click it, advanced, misc - untick java quick starter, and untick place icon in system tray. Disable error reporting - control panel, system, advanced, error reporting, select disable error reporting and leave notify me when a critical error occurs ticked.

did a full scan. not sure how relevant but internet tends to slow when there is a message similar to this one in the grey bar at bottom of my firefox screen "transferring data from ping.chartbeat.net"

did you install cleanmem

IE is lighter on ram than firefox, and may be a better option than firefox

installing firefox ghostery plugin might help with chartbeat, unless it's a firefox bug or net problem

two other things you can do...

1. run mcafee removal tool, there were a couple of entries in the hjt log, just to eliminate hangover conflicts

run CCleaner's cleaner and registry scans after doing this

2. set windows to manage your wifi connections, then turn off the intel carp from running at startup. There seem to have been several posters on here recently having wifi problems, and from what I recall they were all using the Intel wifi manager, and it'll save some memory useage too.
