I do indeed have my own garden but I have a phobia about birds so unfortunately a much as I would love to keep chooks it is just not an option at the moment.

Any help that anyone is able to give would be greatly appreciated. I am happy with the concept that an animal lives well, it is purely its final quick dispatch and the level of stress caused to the animal as I know that adrenaline or any other stress hormone can affect the meat. I have also recently heard some horror stories (as there always will be) about having to wait at the abbatoir and what that can do to an animal. It is those that few weeks, where feed is most important, and the last bit that really interest me.

HFW is someone I really like and have most of his books - but not the meat one. He isnt that far away from me so any he sources locally to him would be good.

I always keep my trailer clean and in fact it is a legal requirement, subject to random inspection, that ALL trailers are cleaned thoroughly within 24 hours of delivering to an abbatoir.... so there is no truth in the belief that animals on the way to their demise can 'smell the blood' of previous occupants!
I hadn't thought of that, but what a good point! There would be no blood in the trailer, and presumably the frozen, packaged meat isn't available the same day to bring home and might even be brought home in a different vehicle....where does smelling blood come into the occasion???

This one seems to fit your bill - not organic, but seem to take care at about the whole of the production process - Pipers Farm

ETA - Yea gods - just seen their prices:eek::eek::eek:

I thought the issue of 'smelling blood' was more to do with the animals being held in the lairage prior to killing rather than the vehicles used to transport them.

Wig-"Some of the 'high credited' plants such as those accredited by the Soil Association were no better than the non-organic ones" source Animal Aid. Giving anything a 'label' means nothing anymore.

Now I disagree with some of what Animal Aid say, and I am not against rearing (or eating) animals for meat. One of their films I watched (apart from it pulling at the heart strings) I couldn't actually see any type of abuse but on others it was horrific.
I had hoped (and believed) that during the past 15 years or so animal welfare standards had risen, after all there has been so much hype about all these associations that promote animal welfare but it is all a load of b*****ks.

I am (was) a huge meat lover but approx 3 months ago I decided enough was enough and gave it up and tbh I really haven't missed it. I would like to give up dairy too after having watched a clip from Ohio dairy abuse, so ok I know it's in the USA but no one can tell me it doesn't go on here either. One step at a time though.

I dont know enough about the process to comment fully but it seems to be the holding pen that causes the most stress.

Um, they are indeed a little steep!! However, I am prepared to trade not eating meat daily for a better quality of meat, say a roast on a Sunday and obviously bacon sandwiches :D with an odd splattering of chops etc throughout the week.

That certainly has the right ethics though and is well hung.
  • The meat book is fab (as is the fish one) Explains everything, from the rearing to how best to cook each cut of meats.

Have you thought of myabe eating Game? For me, I sort of figured that Wild Rabbits have a fab life (In the main) live as a rabbit should, and if shot by a pro, have a far better death too. So I am ok eating them (and ditto wild duck, pigeon, and squirrel) But I point blank refuse to eat farmed duck (hate the idea that a duck will live in a shed with no pond!)

    Just a thought x
