If the landlord did not give you an address to serve notice at the beginning of the tenancy then he cannot legally take rent, if this is the case, then sue for the return of all the rent you have payed. The deposit forms part of your agreement so you still have a legal right to have his address. You can find his address here:

It will be easy enough to find his address. When you do pass on his details to the HM revenue and to the mortgagor.

I bet he has not disclosed income earned from the property and I bet he has not told his bank the property is rented.

I've done this to previous landlords and all landed in financial hot water as a result

Here's another link to help find his address should the Land Registry route not work(eg the house isi owned by a limited company).

what this landlord has done (letting another have access) is clearly out of order, but, i read this thread with a growing disappointment at the gradually increasing hysteria in it

""Anybody could kill you, the fact that he didn't kill you, attempt to kill you or threaten to kill you probably told them that they should concentrate their time on something else.""

Did this man threaten you ? Did he attack you ? Did he abuse you ? - if he did, you didn't tell us about it. The fact that he is from Romania really should have nothing to do with this issue at all.

good luck with getting your deposit back

i think (after reading other threads on mse) that issuing a cheque knowing that you are then going to cancel it is illegal, and that you can report this to the police.

can anyone else help with this point?

You are right, there is no defence in court for stopping a cheque. :)

    I just thought

how about ringing up the local job centre and tellling them

what if he tries to pinch your identity for a romanian girlfriend. Tell the people in authority and keep a diary
The problem does not seem to be with the Romanian Guy, he has done no wrong. He may well be a busker but for all we know he could be trained in some much needed areas of employment. The landlord is at fault not the foreigner. He may be homeless due to circumstance but may well be a respectable citizen and there is nothing here to say that he is not just trying to get himself a roof.
Don't want to sound all PC but the landlord is in the wrong not the new tennant.

I think your right, basically it is fraud and can be treated as such. Certainly, for practical purposes, if the OP does have to go to court (over this checque and/or deposit) the judge won't waste much time finding in the OPs favour.
