bt wiring linebox

Options
Hi
I am new and hope someone can answer my question plse. I moved my bt line box for decoration purposes and all the wires have come out of their slots. I have a BT NTE5 line box and on the bt side I have three screws? marked A,B and E. The four cables coming in from outside are coloured orange, blue, green and brown. I did see somewhere on this site that orange went to the B screw and Blue went to the A screw is that right? I think the other two cables go to slots 2 and 5 but don't which colour? I can't find where I was before on the forum before registering I will be very pleases if someone can help.

Thanks regards
Rogerrs

    Take a look at:

    http://telephonesuk.co.uk/wiring_info.htm

which states that blue and orange should be your A and B wires.

Incidentally if it's an IDC type with punch-down slots, you may want to get a new NTE5, as once the slots open up they never usually grip properly any more.
  • Hi IFOR Thanks for your reply I have looked at the site (the link you gave me) but it starts with blue/white to A and blue/white to B and doesn't say what colours go to numbers 2 and 5?

    Thanks

I don't think it said that. I thought it said:

On older installations (pre-1980) cream or grey cables were used. They contained conductors coloured blue to pin 2, orange to pin 5, brown to pin 3 and green to pin 4 (if used), on some conversions green was used for pin 3 and brown for pin 4.

I'm not sure now whether you are talking about the external (to the exchange) or the internal wiring. AFAIK, the external wiring needs only 2 wires (blue and orange, for older wiring) and the internal needs 2 (blue/white and white/blue). The third internal wire (orange/white) is not generally needed these days and is best left disconnected.
