Gift card rights (comet)

I was given a comet gift card 2 years ago as a present but never could find something to purchase with it. On the back it says that after 12 months of inactivity you forget the credit.
Last year I topped up the card to keep it active but this year I forgot. It's had about 14 months inactivity since I topped up last.
The store said the credit is wiped and couldn't do anything about it but head office can.
I called head office and they said they can't do anything either but to call back to speak to someone higher up next week.
I just would like to know my rights before I call, can anyone help.
Is hate to loose the credit as there was £100 on it.

Purely down to their goodwill I'm afraid.

But seeing as it's Comet, I would say your chances are less than zero. :(
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.
  • Somewhere between 0 and !!!!!! all is a more accurate measure of your chances.

Be persistent, you may get someone on their birthday that may help.

    No rights unfortunately.

This seems so wrong. Imagine you had a pre paid credit card which you topped up with £100. If you were later told you couldn't use it as it was out of date you would say that they were stealing your money. You have effectively given Comet £100 and they have given you nothing in return. Please please do not let this lie. Go to the top as this is extortion and should not be allowed.

Comet are entitled to put expiry dates on their credit, a lot of other companies (if not most) also do this. The OP knew this. It certainly isn't extortion, however your post saying so could be construed as libel.
Also, pre-paid credit cards normally have T&Cs that allow them to take a fee out of your account every month if it isn't used for a specific length of time (6 months or so), just like this.

However to the OP, good luck, I hope you get your money back.
  • Hi, I bought mine about two years ago n at the back of the gift card it is saying 24 month. I have also checked the term n condition on Comet website, it is still stating the credit will only expired after 24 months of consecutive non use. I topped up mine in July this year while the card is still within the 24 months period. No issue topping up there. When I came to use it last week , the store told me my card was expired in sept 2010?!!! The store was absolutely useless, dunno nothing n won't even let me call the cust serv in the store ! I called the cust serv at home, it is under "investigation". Will update the outcome asap . Thanx
