Switching Provider

Hi all
Is it possible to switch providers when you owe the current one money??
My current one keep upping my payments (Have old balance still trying to clear off from when husband was unemployed) and are now really causing us problems. Everytime I complain I get threatened with a pre-payment meter which is forbidden in our tenancy agreement.
Would like to start afresh with a new company (A duel fuel one would be cheaper as gas and electric are with different companies) while still paying off old one at a rate I can afford with all the threats and unpleasentness!!
Thanks
Hannah

No, you have to clear the debt when you switch. If the arrears are more than about £200 then the outgoing supplier will normally block the transfer. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
