As children can have free eye tests I take my daughter to an independant optician with an excellent reputation with children.

As children's eye test are free on the NHS it makes no difference cost-wise whether it is Specsavers, Boots, D&A or an independant.

But presumably the Opticians dont do it for free.
  • No, they dont do it for free, but the NHS dont cover the full private fee either, so if the optician is fully booked with NHS patients they are 'loosing' money. (I realise they are not really loosing, but not making as much profit)

There is no such thing as NHS eyecare anymore, its all done on vouchers and claiming a portion of the cost back.

As swattie said, it makes no difference to the patients fees where they go, so it does mean they can choose a 'better' optician rather than the affordable.

I personally find that eye tests are best done by independants. The problem with specsavers and other larger groups is they always have locum or visting optometrists, quick eye tests. Whereas, most independants give you that high level of continuity with same optometrists each time and thorough less rapid eye tests.
It's a little like supermarkets and grocery stores............take your pick!

The difference is that it is your eyes end of the day and not your cornflakes.
