Skomer Island - Puffins

Hi,
I am hoping to go to Skomer to see the puffins in May this year. Has anyone here been? i heard this was one of the best places to see them as you can walk around the island. It seems that you can't book the boat trips in advance and have to be early to get a place, are the queues big? Also i would welcome any other suggestions of things to do in the Pembrokeshire area and any nice places to stay. Thanks for any help!

All part of my campaign to see more of this country. I have travelled the world but have been to shamefully few places in Britain!
we have love enough to light the streets.

Ive not been to Skomer but I have been to Pembrokeshire. There seemed to be plenty of boat trips to Ramsey Island advertised in St Davids, which is a nice place. I would think you could book the day before if necessary. Tenby Beach is very impressive too. And the coastal path is lovely. In fact I think Pembrokeshire is the nicest part of Britain that I have visited. There is also a chapel in the cliffs at St Govan's head, worth a look!

    Hi

I've never been to Skomer, although I would love to go! We had a few days in Pembrokeshire last summer and went on a whale & dolphin watching trip from St Justinians (about 2 miles away from St Davids). As well as seeing a pod of about 20 common dolphins, the boat took us around Grassholm Island where we saw thousand of gannets nesting. Also saw puffins, many other seabirds, a peregrine falcon & harbour porpoises.

Can highly recommend them, we had a fabulous time.

St Davids itelf is well worth a visit, I knew it was small, but didn't realise just how tiny it was!

  • May is probably the best time to see this beautiful place - I'm biased because I live here! The spring flowers on the cliffs will be stunning and the whole county bursting with life.
I'm ashamed to say I haven't been to Skomer, but as Simon mentioned, Ramsay island is fantastic for sea bird colonies and easy to get to from St. Davids (the UK's smallest and most beautiful city, actually a large village!)
In fact either St. Davids or Fishguard would be great places to stay; both tiny but with good eateries etc. and wild coastal walks.
There's a couple of buses aimed at walkers called the Strumble and Puffin(!) shuttles which do a loop of the north coast and are well worth a ride!
    Hope you enjoy Pembs.

  • Hi

I have been in May and it is stunning . The bluebells just cover the island and it is quite mind blowing.

    Have fun
