Fake MP3 player scam - Please read!!!

For to long now eBay has chosen to turn a blind eye to the fraud that is being committed daily through their on-line auction system. Every day 1000's of FAKE MP3\MP4 players are being sold to unsuspecting buyers worldwide. These players are being listed as having 2GB\4GB and 8GB (Gigabyte) of storage capacity but in reality they have much smaller memory modules that have been manipulated (Hacked) so that they read as larger than their true capacity. These memory modules can be as small as 128MB. Unfortunately most buyers do not realize they have been scammed until it is too late. There have been no reports of authentic cheap no brand 4GB or 8GB chiPods or Nano clones as they are referred to. 2GB is reported as the maximum memory size supported however players as small as 512MB have been found to be tampered with.

i fell for this scam and am soooo annoyed. address on ebay account was fake and i knew i should have checked the postcode (doesn't exist). the seller isn't replying to me now so i've done a paypal dispute because he's ignoring my messages. this one seller who'll probably stop and switch accounts has around 140 sells since at least 12 days ago when he started and there are loads of these mp3 players just being listed and not being removed! i don't think i will get my money back either  so angry that my 4gb turned out to be 1gb. you probably think i'm a fool but then so has the many out there spoken of and unknown. some people probably don't even realise their mp3 might be fake.

sadly enough, i found these mp3 players through a link martin provided (imagine thumbs down :money: ) http://www.lastminute-auction.com/uk

There are fakes and scams on ebay?

    Whatever next.

I am sorry that you have lost money but I am curious to know how you fell for this scam?

Did you buy something because the price was too good to be true?

Did you check the sellers record and establish how long he has been trading etc?

Most people can avoid most scams most of the time by being sensible.

Most scams rely on buyer’s greed and or gullibility.

i went into a paypal dispute the very same day i got the mp3 player and realised it was fake. on the same day i attacked them through a load of emails with some stuff. some bits i got wrong, but they haven't denied they knew they were selling fake mp3, just some other stuff i said about them (fake addresses, phone numbers etc). they quickly issued my refund which i've got to wait over bank transfer in paypal and they said i should send it back. once i've got the money what should i do? i didn't want to have extra postage costs so they said they'll pay for it. should i send the item back? should i send the box and keep the mp3 player? is it possible if i really do send it back, they can claim they haven't received it and will it effect my refund? do i have to send it back because they have refunded me without getting it back or is it mines to keep? thanks.
  • You need proof of posting it back, either send it recorded or get proof of postage, paypal may need this for the claim if they say they haven't received it.
2p off is still 2p off!
  • It's very sad :(, the petition already signed by more than 2400 people but eBay still ignoring the fact of the barefaced lie.

Recently I've bought 3 x 32GB player from eBay, they appear to be fake (less than 2GB each). One completely "died" after 2 days, another two impossible to use. In other words, I bought lots of s**t :wall:

Do you know is there any Consumer Protection service (something like FSA ombudsman, but for sold goods quality) where I can complain?

It's not about money just to obtain justice.
