How much notice to cancel BT?

After all the years of paying BT for telephone and b/b, i have finally decided (should have done it years ago, i know) to switch supplier. Shall hopefully be joining SKY, as i have the tv with them. According to the nice lady on BT live chat, i am not in a contract :-). But forgot to ask how much notice i have to give to cancel. My next BT bill is due 14th December and would have hoped to get it sorted by then, as don't want to be paying 2 suppliers in my first month. When would be the best time for me to switch? considering i have been told it takes up to 3 weeks for SKY to be installed

    From the BT website:

Once we have provided the service, you may tell us to stop providing it at any time by giving us 30 days' written notice, either by email to any email address we may have given you or by letter to the address on your last BT bill or any other address we have given you, for that purpose. If you are switching to another provider through an approved process, the notice you must give us will be 14 days. We can stop providing the service to you by giving you 28 days' written notice.

So as long as you use a MAC, it's 14 days. You won't pay twice in one month, you'll be billed up to the date of the switch, and by Sky from then. There is no physical install to do, you are just switching providers.
Don't bother with Sky Connect, only go for it if you can get Sky LLU on your exchange.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Ok thanks........but ermmmm...what is MAC AND LLU :-S
  • So if i call SKY and they offer me something fantastic and i want to go ahead with it, will they just deal with the switch over, or do i still have to email BT to cancel?

    Migration Authority Code.
    Local Loop Unbundled.
Do an exchange search on https://www.samknows.com to check if Sky are LLU.
Get your MAC from BT, sign up with Sky using that, cancel the DD with BT when you've paid your final bill.
The best signup deals are generally online via a cashback site.
