Are you happy with the end result or not? If so, leave it be (but obviously you should get the slight reduction for the thinner underlay).
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • I would call or personally go in there if local - email is easily ignored

For future reference buy the underlay separate with rods etc and get your own local fitter - they will fit and cut the uinderlay as well as the carpet for a fixed price

They won't ignore my email - they want the rest of their money! I wanted to do it via email, so that I have time to think about their reply, rather than feeling pressured into making a rush decision if it's face to face.

I will address this as several people have mentioned that it works out cheaper to buy grippers, underlay etc online. I realised this before I purchased. However I retained the grippers from my old carpets and I negotiated a good price with the local shop for the underlay - it still would have been slightly cheaper to do it online, but I was prepared to pay a little extra for the convenience of getting it all from one company and not having to have anything delivered to my house. My problem is not with the price, I don't regret not having bought the underlay online. I'm just very annoyed that I have had the wrong underlay supplied and fitted.

Yes, I was happy. But I imagine that with 11mm underlay my carpet will feel even better. I wonder if it will be weird to have half my house with 11mm underlay and the rest with 8mm. As I've spent £1500, a reduction of say £50 won't feel very satisfying. I'm waiting to see what the shop suggest, but I'm leaning towards getting them to finish my house with 11mm underlay and then I will know if I want them to refit the previously installed carpets with 11mm underlay or accept a reduction in price

Will the carpet be affected moving from 8mm to 11mm carpet?

I'm having my carpet fitted in a couple of week and I'm going for a 10mm underlay which is better than the standard one they offered me. I'll make sure I check this myself as well.

Yes, I would definitely advise measuring the underlay yourself if you are going for something different than what they use as standard. Hope that my (bad) experience helps you out.

I'm not sure if the carpet will be affected from the change of underlay or from being lifted and refitted. I would be very keen to hear from someone that works in the carpet trade about this.
  • In case anyone is interested, I have heard back from the carpet shop, they were very apologetic and have said they will come round, move my furniture, pull up the carpets, lay the correct underlay and then relay carpets
  • Good result then - well done!

    Good result for you!

It does make me wonder if they would have noticed the error themselves but maybe that's just my cynical nature....

This is not a useful comment. In fact - it stands out to me as being a bit weird - a bit "I"'m alright jack".

This is a forum and not all posts have to be helpful. I was just sighing a sigh of relief that a carpet place couldn't do it to me as I had supplied my own.

Now your post just states the bleeding obvious!
  • glad you got it sorted. Good result!
  • Good outcome.

Just make sure you're in when they do it, or at least when they start, so you can measure the underlay yourself and make sure they actually do what they say they will. (Another cynic over here).
