All season tyres

I wondered what peoples opinions are of all season tyres?

The front two tyres of my car are nearing the end of their life and instead of replacing them with more summer tyres I was wondering whether changing all 4 tyres over to all-season would be a better solution as I could do without the hassle of being totally stuck and unable to use my car in the event of snow.

My tyres are 175/65R14 82T so brands like Vredstein Quatrac 3's are only around £54 a corner plus fitting (blackcircles doesnt seem to have any in my size!), so it doesn't seem to be much more than a summer tyre for price anyway.

I doubt you will notice the difference. Proper winter tyres are what you need for the snow.

But for all year round use they may need replacing before next years snow.

Depends how many miles you do, But generally they will wear quicker.

Mileage is about 10,000 per year.

I don't want Winter tyres as I can't really be bothered changing them over to Summer treads when it gets warmer. Hence why I was thinking about all-seasons.

If you plan to keep the car for a few years, it's safer and more cost effective to have separate winter and "summer" tyres, assuming you can find some suitably cheap wheels to put them on and don't mind doing the swap yourself.

I put summer in quotes, because you'll be using them in spring and autumn too.

This assumes that your summer tyres are quality ones and aren't Linglong DitchFinders.

edit as the reply above appeared while I'm writing: I'm sure that if you took the winter wheels to an independent tyre place during a quiet time. They do the swap for you for 10 or 20 quid cash. :)
  • Vred Quatracs, both 2 and 3 wear well.

Recommended without reservation, and as you've found reasonably priced in sensible sizes.

We run all season tyres on one of our cars. They're a pretty decent compromise as long as you're not looking for absolute performance in either summer or winter.

If you live in the sticks I'd go for winter tyres. If you mainly live in town/use main roads then all seasons can be a good choice.

I don't live in the sticks, the roads I travel are pretty busy - a mixture of motorway and single lane winding country roads.

Do all-seasons wear noticably faster than summer tyres? And any suggestions where to purchase them from other than mytyres/blackcircles?

    Thanks :)

    Not particularly that I've noticed.

I bought mine at Micheldever tyres.

It is more a function of how you drive. If you abuse them, tyres can wear very quickly.

I run factory fitted M+S all season tyres on my RWD car. I did a lot of miles on snowy and icy roads last winter and they were fine.
